Task 4 - Research

Construct 2:

For my Final Major Project I have decided to make a 2D game. For my 2D Game I will be using a software called construct 2. This is because it is easier to use than most other softwares and was one of the few made available to use. Construct 2 also had a different coding system than most other softwares, as it uses visual event sheets. I also found that Construct 2 was an easier software to use as doing things like importing sprites and tilesets was very easy to do and add to the game.

Piskel:

I will be using a website called Piskel to make my sprites and any items in my game. Piskel is a website that you can use to make 2D sprites which can then be exported into construct 2 and be animated. I used Piskel to make my character sprites, weapons and miscellaneous items such as ammo and ammo packs. I also created the animation for all my sprites and exported them to construct 2 to make the animations work. Piskel is very easy to use and offers a wide range of different colours and features so that more detail can be added to the sprites. The ability to resize the canvas size in Piskel allows for bigger and more detailed sprites to be made which will therefore mean that the game overall could also be significantly improved.

Pyxel:

In order to make all my tilesets, I used a software called Pyxel. In pyxel, making the tilesets is easy and there is plenty of room to make as many tilesets as you need. Once I had created the tilesets, I exported them and imported them in Construct 2 and added them into my game. Pyxel uses a range of different colours, which you can then use to make more detailed and better looking tilesets.

Game Inspiration:

Metal Slug:

I chose metal slug as an inspiration to my game because metal slug has a variety of different weapons in the game that can be picked up. It is also a side scrolling shooter in which you cannot turn back in, you can only go forward, but can walk around in the frame to pick up any items. Metal slug also has different variations of enemies, such as tanks, helicopters, machine gunners, grenadiers and many more. I also liked the animation in the game and the score system, and the fact that the game had many different bosses and locations. I wanted my game to look similar to Metal Slug, making sure enemies run towards the player and shoot on sight, while the player can pick up ammo packs and different weapons to kill the enemies. I also liked the amount of detail each level has and wanted my game to have detail that is similar to Metal Slug to make it more fun to play and less boring to look at.

Mega Man:

Another game I took inspiration from is Mega Man. I chose Mega Man as the levels in their games have a high amount of detail which make the games look better and more fun to play. I also like the weapons in the game, which can have different fire rates and other statistics to alter the gameplay. I also like the huge variation of enemies in the games, where the enemies all have different attack styles and different behaviours. I also like the different animations the game has and the ability to shoot not just forward, but also up and down.
